National Science Foundation sponsors Case Virgo
ICL Study

Posted 31-Aug-2006
The National Science Foundation has awarded Case Astronomer Chris Mihos
a three year grant to expand the survey of intracluster light (ICL) in
the Virgo Cluster.
Early results released by Case astronomers in 2005 (see right) show the
core of the Virgo cluster to be filled with extreme faint starlight,
from stars ripped from their parent galaxies as galaxies collide and
orbit within the cluster.

Over the
next three years, this survey will be expanded study other regions of
Virgo, including the Virgo Southern extension, and also to obtain color
information about the diffuse ICL, and important constraint on the
population of stars that make up the ICL.
